When you think of shopping local, what do you think of? It means something different to everyone. Some support social business because of social reasons, for others it’s a political matter.
At the end of the day, we all want to be part of a vibrant and economically thriving community. So, we shop locally.
IT BOOSTS OUR LOCAL ECONOMY.
Yes, it’s true. When you support local business, you’re in turn supporting your entire community. On average, 70% of the money you spend on local products and services goes right back into your community’s economy.
THE CONNECTION WITH SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS IS REAL
You aren’t supporting the CEO’s of big box stores, you’re supporting Bill who runs your favourite coffee shop. He gets your order spot on every morning because he knows you, and sometimes even gives you a little something extra to snack on, because he can. It’s his own business and he genuinely cares about his customers, and in turn Bill’s customers care about him.
THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ARE TOP NOTCH
I like using the example of food for this one. Locally grown, deep red, juicy strawberries (which are in season right now), are a symbol of summer finally being upon us. The taste is an explosion of fresh and ripe flavor in your mouth. It doesn’t get much better, really. Take a California strawberry: picked from its plant long before it should be in order to sustain the process of importing. These strawberries sometimes aren’t even that red, more of a white/ pink color, and the flavour is extremely dull. I won’t bother going into the lack of nutrients…
SHOPPING LOCALLY MAKES OUR ENVIRONMENT HAPPY
Locally sourced goods means less greenhouse gas emissions, plain and simple. When products travel over 2000 kilometers in distance at such high frequency, there is significant damage inflicted on our environment. We can change the way the world has evolved, by supporting local business. After all, how do you think our great great grandparents got by?
On September 16, 2017, we celebrate those of you who understand the value of supporting local business – the value for our community, for our environment, and for our own well-being. Over 100 independent Kingston businesses will be showcased, including an artisan’s marketplace, at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre from 9am-3pm. With free admission and free parking, there’s no reason to stay home. Show your support and come see what local businesses have to offer. Sampling, kids activities, and a grand prize too. See you then!
